Royal Commission is the ‘right thing to do’

The Coalition welcome the establishment of a Commonwealth Royal Commission because it is the right thing to do.

After weeks of pressure and outrage from community, sporting, business and religious leaders, as well as security and legal experts, the Prime Minister agreed.

Federal Member for Hinkler, David Batt MP has said this is about the truth, accountability and keeping Australians safe.

“Failing to act now risks accepting terror as normal.  We must stand united against extremism and defend the values of this country,” said Mr Batt.

“The Coalition will scrutinise the terms of reference closely with the Jewish community and national security experts.”

Coalition taskforce on antisemitism, extremism and counter terrorism

The Coalition welcome the decision to recall Parliament next week to pass urgent legislation to eradicate antisemitism and strengthen Australia’s counter-terrorism laws following the Bondi Massacre.

The Coalition has stepped up where the Government has not.

The Coalition has established a dedicated Taskforce on Antisemitism, Extremism and Counter-Terrorism in response to the escalating threat posed by antisemitism and violent extremism in Australia.

The Coalition taskforce has been established with three clear priorities:

    • First, it will drive the full implementation of the government’s own Antisemitism Envoy’s report which has sat gathering dust on the Prime Minister’s desk since July (2025).
    • Second, the taskforce will focus on strengthening Australia’s counter-terrorism response. This work will examine weaknesses and emerging risks across intelligence coordination, law enforcement powers, border integrity and the monitoring of individuals on terror watchlists.
    • Third, the taskforce will undertake direct and ongoing engagement with Jewish community leaders, organisations and institutions to ensure their security needs are understood and addressed.

The Coalition taskforce has compiled a package including proposals to:

    • Pass Legislation to Give Effect to the Special Envoy’s Plan to Combat Antisemitism;
    • Strengthen and Modernise Australia’s Counter-Terrorism Laws;
    • Strip Citizenship from Terrorists and Hate Preachers and Bar Extremists from Entering Australia; and
    • End Labor’s Policy of Self-Managed Returns for ISIS Brides.

Gun laws

The Coalition supports a sensible and proportionate examination of current gun laws, but we need to see the actual details.
