The 48th Parliament of Australia has commenced in Canberra, with Federal Member for Hinkler, David Batt, officially sworn in to represent Hinkler.
Mr Batt said it’s a privilege to be in Canberra fighting for his community.
“I am humbled to be the 1,248th Member of the House of Representatives, not many people since 1901 have had this honour, so I’ll be giving it everything I’ve got,” Mr Batt said.
The opening day of Parliament is filled with tradition and includes a Welcome to Country ceremony in the Great Hall and the Governor-General calling the Parliament together.
“This is the first sitting since the election and I’m excited to work every day to ensure my community receives its fair share.”
Mr Batt said cost of living was the biggest issue at the election and that has not changed.
“We must improve the lives of people in my community. Our policies are under review, but our values are not,” Mr Batt said.
An Ecumenical Worship Service for the opening of Federal Parliament was held at the Forrest Wesley Uniting Church on Tuesday morning.
“The message was to love one another as God loves you and to work together across the political divide to help those who need our love and support. The
homeless, the hungry and those less fortunate in our community.
The coalition will hold the government to account and stand up for individual freedom, and reward for effort. We need good policies and a strong plan.”
David is due to deliver his first speech to Federal Parliament on Wednesday July 30.
David is the 1,248th Member of the House of Representatives and the 5th Member for Hinkler.
