Reaching for the stars with First Speech competition

The Federal Member for Hinkler David Batt has visited his former high school to launch the ‘My First Speech’ competition for the electorate of Hinkler.

Speaking at Bundaberg State High, Mr Batt reflected on the school motto ‘per ardua ad astra’, which means ‘through hard work, the stars.’

Mr Batt referenced the adage in his very own first speech in Federal Parliament in July and said the competition is a great opportunity for the leaders of tomorrow to shine.

“This is a chance for our local Hinkler students to put a national spotlight on the issues that matter most to them,” Mr Batt said.

“I hope this competition gives young people a head start and unearths our future leaders.”

This national competition challenges students in years 10, 11 and 12 to envision themselves as newly elected Members of the House of Representatives and write a 90-second speech, focusing on a topic of their choosing.

The winning entrant from each year group, accompanied by a parent or guardian, will be flown to Canberra to deliver their speeches live at Parliament House and participate in an engaging program tailored to deepen their understanding of the legislative process.

Bundaberg State High School Acting Principal Belinda Arnold said her students are keen to be involved.

“No matter where you come from there is opportunity to succeed on a national level. The students will learn that you need to listen to others and represent their cohort as authentically as possible.”

Bundaberg State High School Student, Ruby Peall said it’s important for young voices from rural and regional areas to be heard.

“I think this is a great opportunity for students who come from underrepresented areas to get involved and learn even more than they would in the normal school curriculum.”

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Milton Dick MP has made it a priority to promote parliamentary education to students across the country.

“This competition will provide high school students with the chance learn more about the way our nation’s democracy works, and how actively engaging with the parliamentary process can draw attention to the issues that are most important to them.”

The submission deadline for the competition is set for 11.59pm AEST on Monday 15th September 2025.

An information letter has been sent from Mr Batt to all local high schools.

To learn more about the competition and submit entries, students can visit the dedicated competition website.
