Federal Parliament returns as David Batt throws support behind Hinkler veterans

As the sun went down on Monday, the renowned ‘Last Post Ceremony’ at Canberra’s War Memorial marked one of the first official engagements for Federal MP’s prior to the commencement of the 48th Parliament of Australia.

It’s an honour and privilege to be in Canberra fighting for Hinkler’s fair share.

The sound of the bugle echoing through the Commemorative Courtyard was a solemn reminder of the ultimate sacrifices that allow us to live in a free country.

Attending this moving ceremony is a tradition for parliamentarians on the eve of a new parliamentary sitting.

The ceremony is accessible to the public daily and if you ever visit Canberra, it should be at the top of your ‘to do’ list.

I’m forever grateful and in awe of every one of our Veterans across Hinkler.

Before travelling to Canberra, I visited the regular gathering for veterans and their families at the RSL Bundaberg Sub Branch and Veteran Support Centre.

The ceremony and stories shared at the War Memorial reminded me of the courage of those in my community who have served. I am determined to ensure Veterans are treated with respect and always supported.

On Tuesday, I had the great honour of being sworn in as the 1,248th Member of Parliament and the 5th Member for Hinkler. As I take my seat this week, I thank the people of Hinkler who have entrusted me, and I will work hard every single day to ensure the decisions made in Canberra are in the interest of our region.

The coalition will hold the government account, and we have plenty of work to do. In opposition we will listen, review our policies and we will stand by our values.

Next week I will deliver my first speech to parliament to let Australia know more about myself, the amazing community of Hinkler and my vision.
